The Staatliches Museum Schwerin (Staatliche Schlösser, Gärten und Kunstsammlungen Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) has in its holdings 91 works by Marcel Duchamp and thus one of the largest Duchamp collections in Europe. In 2009, the museum founded its own Duchamp Research Centre as a way of networking this collection complex internationally and realizing new interdisciplinary research projects.
In particular young scholars from the disciplines of art history, film and media studies, musicology, philosophy, and neighbouring fields are invited to explore the oeuvre of Marcel Duchamp, its reception, and the respective societal-artistic context. The aim is the realization of a research project by the recipient within the framework of the grant hereby announced for the seventh time. A connection to the holdings of the Schwerin museum is expected.

Grant benefits
Monthly allowance: 500 euros
Grant duration: 1 year (1 Jan. 2024 – 31 Dec. 2024)

The grant is conceived as a supplement to already existing funds or for the transition to the doctoral or post-doctoral phase. The museum’s society of friends, Freunde des Staatlichen Museums Schwerin e.V., will bear the costs of travel and accommodations. The grant does not offer health insurance coverage or any insurance coverage related to the recipient’s stay in Schwerin. No allowances can be awarded for rental costs or accompaniment by family members. The recipient is expected to introduce his/her project in public in the framework of the grant acceptance, and to report initial interim results to the in-house scholars after six months. The grant period is to end with a lecture in the framework of the museum’s Rendezvous series. This lecture will be published in the Duchamp Research Centre’s Lecture Notes series. The grant bears no residential obligation.

In all publications of the work accomplished with the aid of the grant, or of relevant excerpts from that work, the Staatliche Schlösser, Gärten und Kunstsammlungen Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Freunde des Staatlichen Museums Schwerin e.V. are moreover to be acknowledged in writing for their support.

Terms of application
Holders of masters/Magister degrees and doctoral and post-doctoral students in the fields of art history, film and media studies, musicology, philosophy, and neighbouring disciplines may apply. Good command of English and French is required. A university affiliation is required for doctoral and post-doctoral projects. The commencement of the grant project on 1 January 2024 is desirable.
