homepageSession: « Collecting, Conserving, Documenting, and Exhibiting Early Modern Art in the Southern United States »

The art collections of the Southern United States contain rich and representative holdings of early modern art. This session considers how these objects arrived in prominent public and private collections, how they have been curated and displayed, and how they have also been preserved historically. Papers dealing with paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, illustrated books and ephemera from all cultures and phases related to the early modern period (within ca. 1400-1700) are encouraged. Contributions focusing on the process of archiving and documenting these collections using photography and/or digital means are also welcome.

This session invites submissions from art historians, museum professionals, and collectors. Papers can address case studies of specific works of art, collections, and/or collectors within the broad geographic scope of the U.S. South. Part of the goal of this session is to produce a collection of essays for publication that deals with collecting practices in the South.
