Associate or Full Professor of Early Modern Art, University of Michigan
The Department of History of Art at the University of Michigan invites applications for a full-time, tenured position for the Ilene H. Forsyth Distinguished Professorship in Early Modern Art to begin August 25, 2025. This is a university year appointment and will be at the level of associate or full professor in early modern art. The position may be filled by an applicant working on art produced anywhere in the world between 1400 and 1800 CE. Research and teaching foci could include (but are not limited to) the themes of mobility, materiality, ecology, race, and gender, among others. The successful applicant will be asked to develop and teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervise doctoral students, undertake service appropriate to the rank, and participate actively in the events of the department.
Qualifications
Materials should include a cover letter, current curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy and experience, statement of current and future research plans, a writing sample (35-40 pages maximum), syllabi for two recent courses (one undergraduate and one graduate) and their accompanying student evaluations, teaching evaluations and other evidence of teaching excellence, and contact details of three referees from whom letters of recommendation shall be requested. Additionally, please include a diversity statement that demonstrates your commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through scholarship/research, and/or teaching/mentoring, and/or service/engagement. There may be some overlap with your research proposal and teaching statements (1-3 pages).
Employment will require both a criminal background check and an institutional reference check regarding any misconduct. Candidates will be required to submit a self-disclosure form as well as an authorization to release information form and must meet all degree requirements prior to the start date of the position.
