The monographic exhibition and the two international
conferences dedicated to Francesco Salviati (1511-1563) in 1998,
organized in Paris and Rome, constituted a fundamental moment of
reflection in order to the understanding of the Florentine artist’s
activity. Primarily, the three events represented a chance to outline
what was known about the painter up until that point; secondly, these
events allowed the identifying of new paths that were still unexplored
by the art-historic research and yet deserving to be investigated.
Numerous were thus the studies that followed: relevant contributions on
Salviati as draftsman, not less important were those aimed at
presenting new solid attributions of pictorial works, till the
discovery of the post-mortem inventory of the artist’s possessions, a
document that provided noteworthy information on the ‘readings’ by
Cecchino and on the ‘instruments’ which were available to his genius in
the creation of his highly praised ‘inventions’.
The conference intends to focus the latest discoveries which emerged
with regards to the artist, in the attempt of identifying new possible
fields for research. The dynamics between him and men of letters
contemporary of his time will be particularly analyzed; with the
painters Perino del Vaga and Jacopino del Conte, around the Oratory of
San Giovanni Decollato in Rome; finally, the echo of his work in Venice.
