Kunsthalle Bern is an internationally renowned venue for engaging with contemporary art. Since its inception in 1918, its exhibitions have offered a unique space for presenting, testing, and discussing contemporary artistic practice.

Starting from 1 February 2024, the Board of the Kunsthalle Bern is seeking to appoint a

Director of Kunsthalle Bern (full-time position)

In this position, you will be responsible for the artistic direction, the management of the institution and its budget. This encompasses the overall operational management as well as the technical and personnel management of a small team. With the support of the Board of Directors, you will work on advancing the institution’s strategic direction. You will play a significant role in developing the Kunsthalle in a forward-looking way and in elaborating the connections between contemporary art and social discourses. By cultivating existing partnerships with the local and international arts scene as well as with related municipal institutions, you will make a valuable contribution to the success of Kunsthalle Bern.

What you bring to the position:
– Excellent knowledge of the contemporary art world and international networks
– Several years of experience in working with artists and in planning and curating exhibitions
– Experience in mediating art to a diverse public at the local and international level through exhibitions, events, and publications as well as excellent communication skills
– Experience in an executive position in an institutional/arts setting
– Proven managerial and social skills, the ability to work in a team and within a dynamic work setting
– Commitment to working in an inclusive and diverse artistic environment
– Willingness to establish relationships with sponsors and art patrons and to secure their longterm commitment to the institution
– Ability to build and nurture local, regional, and international networks

Working languages are German and English, preferably you have some knowledge of French. The regular term of office is seven years. A co-directorship is possible provided the concept is persuasive.
