Fondazione 1563 per l’Arte e la Cultura of the Compagnia di San Paolo launches a competition for 5 Fellowship Grants on the Age and the Culture of Baroque.
Application deadline: 27th of July 2019, 12 am midnight (Italy time).

The Study Program on the Age and the Culture of Baroque aims to promote research devoted to Baroque studies and provide young scholars with suitable titles to open up career opportunities in academic and cultural institutions.
To that purpose since 2013 the Foundation has been launching calls for proposals to award fellowship grants on Baroque Culture to Italian and foreign scholars up to and including 35 years of age.
This is the seventh edition of the competition.

2019 Fellowships aim to promote original and individual researches focused on the age and the culture of Baroque in the 17th and 18th centuries. The submitted research projects will have to develop a research subject of the candidates’ choice, articulated in the different humanities (see below), paying specific attention to the connection between the local and the global dimension of the studies.
It will be preferred the submission of a research project that shows a multidisciplinary mastery, that is open to developing inter-disciplinary paths from a methodological point of view, and that is oriented to
the potential of digital tools.

The candidates are invited to submit logical research paths that:
– deal with and scientifically delve into knowledge related to the local culture of Turin and Piedmont;
– value local resources as tools and sources;
– compare and establish connections between the local and the international and more complex dimensions.

The call’s attention to the connection between local and global context confers an international perspective that aims to support and value the ever-more-frequent mobility of young researchers and enable them to collaborate with international institutions.
It will be possible to develop and write the projects and the research in Italian, English, French or Spanish, with the addition of the abstract in Italian and English both.

The competition is open to researchers born after the 1st of January 1984 holding a Master of Science, or other equivalent master’s degrees, obtained at an Italian or equivalent foreign university.
Priority will be given to applicants with a PhD or equivalent awarded by an Italian or foreign university.
The competition relevant disciplines, that may be approached also from a multi-disciplinary and crossdisciplinary standpoint, are as per below (list for illustrative purposes only):
– social and demographic history
– political history
– history of economics and history of economic thought
– history of science and technology
– history of literature
– history of philosophy
– history of music
– history of theatre
– art history
– history of architecture
– military history

Each of the 5 Fellowships will consist of an annual grant amounting to € 23,000 before tax and other charges.
Each Fellowship will last for one year, starting on the 1st of January 2020 and ending on the 31st of December 2020. It may be renewed for an additional quarter, without compensation and upon request of the grantee, supported by the tutor’s opinion and subject to approval by the Foundation, that reserves the right to decide on the matter. The extension must be requested two month before the deadline.
A tutor will be appointed by the Foundation as expert in the selected discipline, in agreement with the grantee, to support her/him in the research activities and to evaluate the outcomes.

The annual grant will be paid out in three installments:
– the first, amounting to 40% of total, when the fellowship is awarded;
– the second, amounting to 30% of total, upon submission and evaluation of the half-year report;
– the third, amounting to 30% of total, upon conclusion of the research project and evaluation thereof.
Refunds of documented travel and accommodation expenses related to the Fellowship project are envisaged for up to € 1,500 per year and must be authorized in advance by the Foundation (“mission procedure”) on a proposal by the tutor.
