Polyptychs’ Fortune and Misfortune. Provenance, Reconstruction, Restitution.
Fortune et infortune des polyptyques. Provenances, reconstructions, restitutions
This conference addresses the dismantling and reconstruction of altarpieces, encompassing diverse centuries, geographical areas, and artistic techniques. It explores the historical dynamics, shifts in taste, fluctuations in market demand, and evolving practices of art preservation and management that have shaped the lives of these complex works of art. The conference also addresses the need for a collective reflection on the epistemological foundations of art history, exploring methods for reuniting dispersed elements both physically and digitally. The complexity and relevance of this topic are attested to by the convergence of several scholarly disciplines. This includes technical art history, connoisseurship, and iconographic analysis, as well as provenance studies (with a focus on the global geography of art), museum studies, collecting and exhibition history, and restitution. These converging fields highlight the interdisciplinary approach necessary to understand the forces that have led to the fragmentation of altarpieces and the challenges inherent in their study and reunification today.
