The Department of Art History and the College of Information Sciences and Technology at The Pennsylvania State University are pleased to announce an upcoming convening on the use of computer vision (CV) for art historical research. Structured as a symposium with a public keynote, this event will take place June 14 & 15 at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia. The keynote lecture, to which all are invited, will be delivered by Leo Impett (University of Cambridge) on Friday, June 14 at 6 pm. Scholars wishing to attend the symposium scheduled for Friday and Saturday morning are invited to indicate their interest as explained below.

The symposium will feature presentations by scholars currently engaged in projects that apply CV to art historical research as well as discussions of key issues and concepts relevant to this emerging area of research. We are now seeking applications from interested scholars. Selected scholars will have their travel and 2-nights’ accommodation costs covered. All participants will have the opportunity to present their work.

To better facilitate discussion, the symposium is limited to 25 participants. At this time, we are seeking up to six participants to present on their current work and participate in symposium discussions. Thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), participants’ travel expenses and 2-nights’ accommodation will be covered.

DEADLINE
Applications are due via email to ecm289@psu.edu by 11:59 pm EST on Monday, January 15, 2024. Acceptances will be sent in mid-February.

ELIGIBILITY
Applicants should be researchers in art history or a related discipline (e.g. archaeology, architectural history, visual studies) actively engaged in scholarship that brings CV or ML to bear on some aspect of visual arts research. Scholars at any stage in their career, including graduate students, are invited to apply. International scholars are eligible. Those applying as part of a team should submit a single application that identifies all members of the team who wish to participate.

– Letter of Interest (no more than 3 pages), which should describe your current research and the potential benefit of participation in the convening for your work
– CV (where applicants are part of a team, CVs of all wishing to attend the symposium should be included)
