Offre de poste : « Curator/Senior Curator – Ancient Mediterranean, National Museums Scotland »

You will curate, develop and make accessible our Ancient Mediterranean collections, within the Department of World Cultures. Working with the Department Keeper, your duties will include responsibility for the collections; acquisitions; exhibitions; research; publications; and answering public enquiries. The collections at the National Museums Scotland in the World Cultures Department, include material from Ancient Egypt and the Sudan, representing all periods from prehistoric to early Christian and Islamic (6,000), Ancient Near eastern material from the Levant to Mesopotamia, from the early historic to Hellenistic eras (3,500); Greek, Roman and Etruscan artefacts, including ceramics, glass, terracottas, bronzes, jewellery and sculpture (3,000) and Ancient Cypriot material, largely archaeological, from prehistoric to Hellenistic eras (1,100). Your key projects over the next few years will be the planning and development of research and publication projects addressing the history and scope of the collection, as well as the planning for a new Ancient Egyptian gallery once the current gallery is de-installed.

You will have a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject area covering ancient history, classical archaeology, archaeology of the ancient world, though a specialist orientation in Egyptology is preferred. A postgraduate qualification (or equivalent) in Egyptology Ancient History, or Archaeology of the Ancient World is extremely desirable. You must have experience of working in a museum environment, be knowledgeable and enthusiastic about similar collections and be able to demonstrate best practice in collections management. It is expected that you will have some experience of undertaking research, responding to public enquiries and of preparing and delivering presentations. Good ICT skills, including experience of Microsoft Office and collection databases, are required. You must also be able to demonstrate your ability to plan and organise your workload, manage projects and build relationships within and outwith National Museums.

Please note that appointment to this post will be at the lower Curator level in the first instance (i.e. Grade 4).
