In the course of the academic year 2011-2012, the Faculty of Letters at the Catholic University of Paris has instituted a lecture series in the history of art, called “Les Jeudis de l’art”. The bi-monthly meetings are designed to introduce the students to academic research and to create a place for interdisciplinary exchange between students, staff and the general public. In the inaugural year of the program, we wanted to reflect the wide chronological range and different cultures covered in the courses taught at the ICP. We want to continue this approach for the next academic year.

In order to create some connection between the different lectures, while preserving the chronological and geographical breadth, we propose to unite the lectures of the coming year under the general theme of art and its elites. The concept of the elite is understood in a broad sense to include questions of nobility, of politics, of religion and intellect. Among the concerns which could be addressed are the roles the elites play as patrons, their impact on the making of a work of art and their relationship with the artists. The problem of how these elites are represented is also central to our concerns. All abstracts by young or established scholars are welcome. Each paper should be thirty to forty minutes long to allow for general discussion. The participants should adapt their contributions to take account of the nature of the audience which brings together scholars, teaching staff and students as well as members of the general public. Deadline of submission is 20th of June 2012. We would prefer contributions in French. Please email your 300-word abstract to the addresses below. Please don’t hesitate to contact us should you have any further questions.
