Call for PhD Research fellow at University of Leuven, History of Art,
Iconology Research Group

For the period of October 1 2012 – September 30 2016.

In relation to project: « Caput Iohannis in Disco or St John’s Head on a
Platter: object, context, medium, roots. Towards an iconology of the
head in the Middle Ages and the early Modernity between North and
South »

With the following project outline:

1. The Johannesschüssel forms an ambiguous object/artifact and
difficult to define. It emerges between 1250-1550
2. The Johannesschüssel has a complex Sitz im Leben/ context in
devotion, liturgy, drama and ‘low culture’ (popular and magical uses of
the artifact).
3. The Johannesschüssel shows a ‘medium-shift’ from sculpture to
painting at the end of the Middle Ages
4. The Johannesschüssel is related to a wider archetype and deeper
situated roots of a fascination for the loose (male) head in European
culture with important dynamics on the North-South axes.
