Tenth Quadrennial Italian Renaissance Sculpture Conference.
Stony Brook University – The State University of New York
Stony Brook, NY
1-3 May 2025
Co-organized by Karen Lloyd and Fernando Loffredo
Sponsored by The Center for Italian Studies

The Tenth Quadrennial Italian Renaissance Sculpture Conference, known colloquially as “Provo-Athens,” will convene in Stony Brook, NY on 1-3 May 2025. (NB: This is a slight change in dates from a previous ‘save the date’ email.)

The conference will provide a forum for the presentation of new research on Italian sculpture during the Renaissance, broadly defined. In this 10th anniversary iteration, together with the traditional subjects of the conference, we are interested in chronological and geographic continuities, and also welcome proposals that explore the topic from peninsular, Mediterranean, Hispanic, and global perspectives through the early modern period. The conference offers opportunities for the convivial exchange of ideas in more informal settings and contexts. Keynote lectures by Denise Allen, Kelley Helmstutler di Dio, and Andrea Bacchi will speak to the chronological and methodological range of the conference.

How to apply
We invite proposals for 20-minute papers and encourage scholars at all ranks to apply. The deadline for submission of abstracts is 1 September 2024; notifications about acceptance of proposals will be sent no later than 1 October 2024.

Prospective speakers should send an abstract (no more than 250 words) as well as a brief (1 page) CV to: tenthprovoathens@gmail.com.

Registration and fees
The conference is free and open to the public. No fees are requested, but registration will be required.

Although participants will cover their own travel and lodging expenses, we are working to secure travel grants for pre- and early post-doctoral participants.
