Appel à publication : « for anthology on Early Modern Art and Friendship » (octobre 2020)

Christiane Klapisch-Zuber’s 1976 article on “amici, parenti e vicini” was a seminal study of how social connections were often critical to early modern social, political and/or economic successes. Dale Kent’s various studies on these networks have further evidenced these network as key to the social systems of Renaissance Florence. Art historians have elucidated how social connections were important for artists’ careers and, in tandem, how important artistic collaborations were for Renaissance artists. On the other side of the coin, scholars have examined artistic rivalries that were both cultivated by potential patrons and those that sometimes took a darker turn and were borne from clashing personalities, envy, and disdain for varied artistic approaches, among other issues.

We invite papers that consider the varied fruits of friendship between early modern artists. This could include papers on the visual culture or other historical documentation of artists’ friendships, contemporary accounts of artists’ friendships, album amicorum of artists, or other gifts of art given from one artist to another; artistic collaborations between friends; particular benefits of artists’ friendships, comparative studies of those benefits in different geographical locations or political systems. However, the main focus of the papers should be limited to Italy and communities of Italian artists in other countries, ca. 1400-1600.

Please send abstracts and cvs to Ilaria Andreoli (ilaria.andreoli@item-cnrs.fr) and Kelley Di Dio (kelley.didio@uvm.edu) by April 1. Authors will be notified of acceptance by April 15. Final essays would be due October 15, 2020.
