Negotiating the Nude: Unclothed Bodies in Art and its Historiographies (1860s–2026).
Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte, München, Sep 15–16, 2026 Deadline: Feb 22, 2026
The human body occupies a prominent position in highly controversial social debates. Especially unclothed, its various appearances in art and everyday life, public and private spheres as well as – more recently – digital environments induce and materialize conflicts at the same time. Yet the outrage provoked by Édouard Manet’s Luncheon on the Grass in 1863, and Olympia two years later indicates a different quality than current debates in post-industrial societies, whether allegations of indecency directed at Michelangelo’s David in Florida in 2023 or public responses on Florentine Holzinger’s opera-performance Sancta in Vienna in 2025 were concerned. Although notable instances permeate a Western . . . → En lire plus

Ovid’s Metamorphoses through Time Facultat de Filologia i Comunicació, Universitat de Barcelona, Jul 2–03, 2026 Deadline: Jan 15, 2026
We are delighted to open a call for papers for the closing conference entitled « Ovid’s Metamorphoses through Time: Paratexts, Translations and Iconography » of the research project “The Transformation of Ovid’s Metamorphoses in Modern Printing: text, image and new readership” (MedOvid, PID2023-153036NA-I00). The MedOvid project studies textual and paratextual changes of the medieval vernacular translations of the Latin poem from their manuscript form to their circulation as printed books (particularly, from 1480s to 1550). We focus largely on paratextual materials (prologues, epilogues, letters of dedication, marginalia, engravings) as a means to explore how the text is used or presented in a new light for a wider audience, . . . → En lire plus

Saint Sebastian: the Image of a Saint between Art, Literature, and Visual Culture. International Conference.
Deadline: Mar 31, 2026
In 1976 the British filmmaker Derek Jarman chose the bay of Cala Domestica in Sardinia as the setting for his film Sebastiane, a work that decisively shaped the contemporary reinterpretation of Saint Sebastian, projecting him into an aesthetic, political, and queer dimension. Fifty years after that experience, scholars are invited to the University of Cagliari to reflect on the iconography of the Saint and the imagery it has generated, from its medieval origins to the present day, from a global and interdisciplinary perspective. The aim is to . . . → En lire plus
