The Department of Art History, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, at the University of Cologne welcomes applications for the following position
Professorship (W2)
Modern and Contemporary Art and aesthetic Theories
The position is to begin April 1st, 2016.
The Professorship represents Art History from Modern to Contemporary Art with particular attention to Picture Theory, as well as Cultural and Media Studies and/or Aesthetics and Cultural History. These main areas are geared towards the reflection of theoretical, media-based and cultural conditions and processes of production, adoption and mediation of art based on the formation of actual methodologies and theories.
The future Job Holder is expected, besides the traditional disciplinary research and teaching, to extend the questions on effects of technological innovations, plus reflections on Theory of Art by aesthetic production. The successful candidate is supposed to teach within the unit “Fächergruppe 1”. In this context a close cooperation with the W1-professorships “History and Historiography of Technical Image Media” and “Sound Studies”, based at the Institute for Media Culture and Theatre, respectively at the Institute of Musicology, should be crucial. Furthermore, the collaboration with other disciplines of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities – particularly at the Centre for Media Research and Modernism – are expected. The professorship provides an important interface between Art History and university-based and external research institutions, particularly of the regional Art and Cultural Scene.
The professorship’s teaching commitments include degree courses such as the BA in Art History, the Single and Double Course MA in Art History, as well as the planned MA-degree course inter artes in cooperation with the disciplines Music Studies and Media Culture.
