Women Entrepreneurs: Women assert themselves in the art market

Symposium: ZADIK, University of Cologne, October 22, 2021 (online)
Deadline: June 30, 2021

Organized by Kunstmuseum Stuttgart in the frame of the exhibition « zwischen system&intuition: KONKRETE KÜNSTLERINNEN » (June 26 – October 17, 2021), in cooperation with ZADIK | Zentralarchiv für deutsche und internationale Kunstmarktforschung, Universität zu Köln.

About the project
From the pioneers of concrete art – such as Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Sonia Delaunay, who as artists and entrepreneurs became role models for subsequent generations – to Lily Greenham and Charlotte Posenenske, who in their own way wanted to influence society with their art: The exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart presents for the first time twelve concrete women artists from the 1920s to the 1970s. The project inquires into the specific foundations and conditions for the emergence, dissemination, and reception of the works of concrete-abstract women artists. As part of this project, a symposium will be held in cooperation with ZADIK, which will focus in particular on the role of women as actors in the art market and their networks in the concrete art scene. A special emphasis will be on women gallery owners.

About the symposium
Research into the role of women in the art market in general, and in particular of women gallery owners who played a significant role in the dissemination of abstract-concrete art, is a desideratum in research discours. In contrast to many of their male colleagues, the pioneering women in the art market have received less attention so far. The aim of the symposium is to introduce women gallery owners and their work in cooperation with women artists. In this context, strategic aspects and possible reasons for deciding on an artistic program against the background of prevailing trends are to be presented and highlighted. Furthermore, networks, cooperations or overarching structural issues can be addressed, as well as potentials or challenges of women gallery owners in the art market up to the present and in changing global contexts clarified and discursively discussed.

The online symposium will include contributions in the form of 20-minute keynote lectures on these or related topics:

– Gender discourses with a focus on the 20th/21st century art market.
– Women gallery owners with a focus on abstract / concrete art and their corporate structures
– Business networks between women abstract/concrete art gallerists, across gender and with artists and collectors.
