Call for proposals for exposé grants to prepare a dissertation project.

The Department of Art History as Cultural History (Kunstgeschichte als Kulturgeschichte = KuK) led by Prof Bénédicte Savoy at the Technische Universität Berlin is offering up to three exposé grants for the preparation of a dissertation project. During the six months of funding provided by the grant, an exposé is to be developed for a subsequent application for an external doctoral scholarship. This offer includes the supervision of the project at the department, in accordance with the doctorate regulations of the TU Berlin.

The topic for the planned doctorate should be related to one of the research areas of the KuK department and is to be chosen freely and independently by the applicant within this framework. The current research foci of the department are (post-colonial) provenance research, Nazi-looted art, collection and museum history (18th-21st centuries), and French-German cultural transfer. We offer:
– A grant of €1,100 per month for up to six months (plus a family allowance of €200 per month for applicants with children) to prepare an exposé convincing in form and content for a dissertation project. The grant can start from 1 October 2024 at the earliest.
– Funds of up to €400 per grant holder will additionally be provided for research trips in conjunction with the preparation of the exposé.
– Supervision in the development of the topic and the preparation of the exposé as well as support in the application for a subsequent doctoral scholarship.

Suitable applicants:
Highly qualified and motivated graduates in the humanities who wish to embark on a dissertation in the field of art history at TU Berlin. The qualifying thesis for a subsequent doctorate must have been submitted at the time of application and the degree must be completed by the time the fellowship begins. The degree should not have been awarded more than three years ago.

Required documents (in German or English):
– A cover letter (max. two pages) stating the motivation for the dissertation, the compatibility with the research foci of the department and outlining the plans for subsequent funding of the doctorate,
– a dissertation outline (three pages plus literature), which should in particular address the current state of research as well as your own preliminary work, research question, methods and expected academic contribution,
– the manuscript of the Master’s or comparable qualification thesis,
– a curriculum vitae in tabular form,
– university diplomas (or a transcript of records if the degree is not yet available)
