« Collecting to Shape and Reflect the Nation: Changing Museum Strategies from the Nineteenth to the Twentieth Century ».
V&A South Kensington, London, Oct 22–23, 2026 Deadline: Apr 15, 2026
The Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) and the Germanisches Nationalmuseum (GNM) are collaborating to organize a pair of conferences that will explore the connections between museums’ pasts and their future missions. Through a first event in London in October 2026, and a second event in Nuremberg in October 2027, we aim to explore how large-scale museums with a nation-wide scope can critically assess their own past to inform their present-day self-understanding, and to discuss the ways in which these museums can, as ‘national’ institutions, help to foster cohesion in 21st-century multicultural societies.

Ethics of queer in/visibility
Marsilius Kolleg, Heidelberg University, Sep 30–Oct 2, 2026 Deadline: Mar 31, 2026
Concepts of in/visibility have played an important role in queer activism and gender studies for a long time. Being seen and being heard, having a voice and a place at the table have been manifest political goals but also powerful metaphors of representation through decades of feminist and queer movements and academic debates. A vocabulary of in/visibility informs many ways of talking about gender, from the metaphor of the closet (Sedgwick 1990, Kibbey 2023) with regard to sexual orientation, to the notion of passing (Goffman 1963) for gender presentation and gender identity. Many aspects of feminist and queer practice rely on becoming . . . → En lire plus

Threads of Knowledge: Weaving and the Life of Textiles in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. 29th Biennial Conference of the Medieval and Renaissance Studies Program of Barnard College.
For centuries, textiles clothed bodies and books, veiled relics, marked liturgical and political boundaries, and insulated and adorned walls. Their portability and preciousness made them ideal agents of exchange. They carried forms, materials, and techniques across vast regions and cultures. It is through textiles, perhaps more than any other artistic medium, that the global interconnectedness of this historical period comes into view. At the same time, their manufacture could remain insistently local and idiosyncratic, dependent as it was—before industrustrialization—on individual touch and rhythm. Textiles could be a luxury or a thing of everyday life, and medieval and Renaissance writers exploited . . . → En lire plus

Atlantic Circulations: Architecture and Travels between Americas and Europe since the 18th Century.
The inclusion of the Americas within the horizons and intellectual concerns of travelers interested in architecture and the city since the Age of Enlightenment is essential within a series dedicated to the architect’s journey. The Americas, understood as a plural and heterogeneous continental space encompassing North, Central, and South America, were not only the stage for the extension of European itineraries but also the starting point for journeys to Europe by figures of American architectural culture, as well as a substantial part of the beginnings of Atlantic circulations that, since the 18th century, have intensified between both shores of the Atlantic. A few years before the journeys to Greece by Julien-David Le Roy and James . . .
