eikones Summer School 2013

This year’s eikones Summer School of the NCCR Iconic Criticism will explore the following themes in three transdisciplinary courses:
Course 1 examines the relationship and mutual reflection of film and painting. Aesthetic, theoretic, and historically significant aspects of this interplay will be analyzed, both from the point of view of the fine arts and from the point of view of film. Formal borrowings will be considered along with diegetic, technical, and ideological appropriations; the realm of the avant-garde will be discussed as well as that of the culture industry.
Course 2 investigates the status of the image at the beginning of aesthetic modernity in Germany. In accordance with an emphatic concept of art and “Poesie” circa 1800, images or imagery have a constitutive, perhaps indispensable function not only in the different visual arts, but also in literature. A closer examination of this role is of interest for contemporary image theory and aims to offer new approaches to the (self-) conception of art and literature in the early nineteenth century.
Course 3 addresses the phenomenon of interference in iconic regularity, iconic meaning, or iconically constituted norms as well as other visual strategies. Since moments of interference reflect the relationship of visibility and invisibility, they are able to make visible, in the disrupted norm or interrupted normality, the rules and regularities enacted in social practices and communication routines. Interference will thus be understood as an image-based or imagistic mode.

Application
The eikones Summer School invites applications by master’s and doctoral students of art history and theory; music, film, media, culture, and literary studies; philosophy, political science, sociology, and related fields. The course will be conducted in German and English; passive knowledge of both languages is mandatory. It is expected that participants will take responsibility for the success of the course, both through oral presentations and through active participation in the discussions. The NCCR Iconic Criticism will provide accommodation and catered lunches.
Applicants should state their area of interest in a project outline (approx. 350 words) and submit a proposal for a presentation in one of the courses described above. We ask that a curriculum vitae be included with the application. Participants will receive more detailed information as well as the reading lists for the seminars after the selection process is concluded.
