June 23-28, 2024
During the 36th CIHA Congress, 21 interviews with participants (chairs, speakers, and attendees) were conducted with the aim of preserving a record of the event. The brief interviews captured the participants’ firsthand impressions and experiences on several points: the organization of the Congress and its various programs, the human element, key highlights, as well as the opportunities provided by the theme, the gatherings, and the connections made.

The 36th CIHA Congress was organized under the aegis of the Comité français d’histoire de l’art (CFHA) in partnership between the CFHA, the Institut national d’histoire de l’art (INHA), the Université Lumière Lyon 2 and the Laboratoire de recherche historique Rhône-Alpes (LARHRA CNRS UMR 5190).
The CIHA (Comité International d’Histoire de l’Art) is the oldest international organization of art history in the world. It was in fact as early as 1873 that the actors and institutions of the discipline in different countries began a dialogue that was to continue thereafter. This dialogue did not immediately take place with the regularity and publicity that we know today and which has led to it being colloquially referred to as the « Art History Olympiad ». The construction of the international discussion of art history, which would give birth half a century later to Comité International d’Histoire de l’Art, is that of a slow process, particularly sensitive to the vagaries of history and politics.
The main aims of this internationally-renowned scientific and cultural event are to share and disseminate research by bringing together communities of art history and heritage around a unifying theme.
