La revue The Evergreen. Une conception « organique » de l’art et du médium (Édimbourg, 1895-1897)

Les quatre volumes de The Evergreen, a Northern Seasonal (Édimbourg, 1895-1897), publiés au rythme des saisons, oscillent entre une production artisanale sur le modèle des Arts and Crafts et une stratégie éditoriale ambitieuse qui se déploie à une échelle à la fois locale, nationale et internationale, ouvrant la voie à des pratiques avant-gardistes. La profusion d’images et d’ornements en font une revue luxueuse où la techné et la matérialité ont, en soi, valeur de manifeste. Cet article porte sur la symbiose des arts, des lettres et des influences, selon un idéal d’art total pensé par des éditeurs qui conçoivent le contenu et la forme comme un tout organique, sous le signe d’un renouveau politique et artistique.

The Evergreen Journal: An “Organic” Conception of Art and Medium (Edinburgh, 1895–97)

The four volumes of The Evergreen, a Northern Seasonal (Edinburgh, 1895–97), published by natural season, hovered between an artisanal production on the Arts and Crafts model and an ambitious editorial strategy that was simultaneously deployed across the local, national, and international level, opening a path for avant-garde practices. Its profusion of images and ornaments made for a luxurious journal wherein technical ability and materiality had, in and of themselves, a manifesto-like value. This article focuses on the symbiosis of arts, letters, and influences, according to the editors’ ideal of a total art, which, under the banner of political and artistic revival, conceived of content and form as an organic whole.
