Would you like to work with a world-class collection of art and visual culture? Can you communicate the history of art and contemporary art to non-specialist audiences?
The Science Museum Group (SMG) has world-class collections in Art and Visual Culture. To support the exhibition programme and development of the Museum’s Art Collection (based at the Science Museum in London), we are now seeking an experienced curator with a strong knowledge of art, visual culture and an understanding of how to engage audiences.
As Curator of Art and Visual Culture, you will advise on display and preservation of new and existing artworks, as well as guide art commissioning across all the museums in the Science Museum Group. You will also with colleagues across SMG to explore and catalogue our existing scientific and technological art collections, creating opportunities for new digital access. You will work alongside other specialist curators in the museum’s team, fostering links with external stakeholders, including other museums, artists and makers, and industry. You will also develop strategies for embedding our fine and contemporary art collections in SMG’s forward programmes of temporary exhibitions and permanent galleries and ensure a presence for them in SMG’s social and broadcast media outputs.
Joining us, you will have broad knowledge of the history of art in relation to science, technology and medicine. You will bring experience of working in a museum or art gallery environment, with a passion for inclusion and the ability to communicate the history of art and contemporary art to non-specialist audiences, for example through exhibitions, articles, blogs, outreach or teaching. You will have excellent communication skills with a track record of working collaboratively, influencing, and leading discussions with, multiple different stakeholders, including Directors and Trustees.
