The Morgan Drawing Institute will award one or two Post-Doctoral Fellowships and one Pre-Doctoral Fellowship for the 2012-13 academic years. Fellowships are open to museum curators, art historians, and scholars in related academic fields and are intended to support independent research projects on subjects relating to some aspect of the history, theory, collecting, function or interpretation of old master and/or modern drawings. While proposed research projects may focus in some way on works in the Morgan’s collection, this is not a necessary prerequisite for consideration or support.
Post-Doctoral Fellowships are awarded to scholars and curators at all stages of their careers. Applicants must demonstrate an established record of publications and professional experience and achievement, and hold a Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in the history of art or related field at the time the application is submitted.
Stipend: $25,000 for six months (pro-rated accordingly for a shorter period) plus a travel allowance intended to support or subsidize a short research trip and one-time reimbursement for round-trip travel expenses associated with the beginning and end of the fellowship.
Pre-Doctoral Fellowships are awarded to advanced-level graduate students in the history of art who have completed all course work and exams and are currently engaged in carrying out research leading to the completion of a doctoral dissertation in the history of art, some component of which pertains to the history, theory, collecting, function or interpretation of old master and/or modern drawings. With rare exceptions, applicants who are just beginning dissertation research will not be considered.
Stipend: $20,000 for a period of six months plus a travel allowance intended to support or subsidize a short research trip and one-time reimbursement for round-trip expenses associated with the beginning and end of the fellowship.
Fellowship Requirements
Fellows are expected to spend the majority of their fellowship period in residence at the Morgan Library & Museum, although visits to local collections and research at other local libraries are encouraged. A brief research trip if relevant to the project is also permissible. Participation in bi-weekly lunches is mandatory and attendance at occasional events organized by the Drawing Institute throughout the year such as private visits to exhibitions, scholars’ days, seminars, lectures, and an annual symposium is strongly encouraged during the fellow’s period of residency. Upon completion of the fellowship, each fellow is required to make a final presentation to other members of the Drawing Institute and invited colleagues, and to submit to a brief written report (1-3 pages) that will be published on the Morgan’s website.
Fellows are expected to make their own travel and housing arrangements. No housing is provided.
For foreign applicants, non-financial assistance with procuring a visa is provided (you have to pay the visa fees)
