 Established in 2009, Artl@s is a project of a Spatial (Digital) history of arts and letters, providing scholars with the tools and support needed in order to expound their narratives and qualitative evidence with spatial representations and quantitative analyses. On June 12, 13 and 14, the Artl@s team organizes an international conference titled “Global Art History and the Peripheries”, in partnership with the École normale supérieure, the Terra Foundation for American Art and the Institut national d’histoire de l’art, inviting researchers to gather and develop a removed and well-thought out approach to the question of the peripheries in art history.

Recent developments in web mapping enable to create multidimensional, dynamic maps that display vast amounts of spatial and temporal data while remaining readable and intuitive.
Spatial dynamic visualizations allow historians to study the locations and movements of artistic agents and artworks, their integration in social fields, as well as their response, whether visual or discursive, to these spatial logics. The new Spatial (Digital) art history thus participates in the redefinition of art history by meeting the challenges of the Spatial, Global, and Digital Turns. But to which extent is it groundbreaking and productive ? What are its unique contributions compared to those of traditional art historical methods ?

Artl@s, programme de recherche d’histoire spatiale et transnationale des arts et des lettres (www.artlas.ens.fr), organise en partenariat avec l’Université Paris-Ouest Nanterre La Défense, une demi-journée d’études sur la question de la Belgique dans le système des centres et des périphéries artistiques aux XIXe et XXe siècles.
