Journée d’études : « Current Research on Early Sixteenth-Century Art in Leuven »

Within the framework of the exhibition ‘Signed, Jan R. A Renaissance master rediscovered’ (08.11.2012 – 17.02.2013), M – Museum Leuven is organising a one-day symposium in which several experts will present their current research on early sixteenth-century art in Leuven. A series of lectures will shed light on new findings on two Leuven-based painters: the rediscovered master Jan Rombouts and Albrecht Bouts. There will also be an opportunity to visit the exhibition and to discuss the works of art with the experts.

Provisional programme

10:35 am : Introduction by Marjan Debaene (M – coordinator of the exhibition)

10:45 am : Lecture by dr. Yvette Bruijnen : Jan Rombouts : the matter of his identity and the definition of his oeuvre

11:30 am Lecture by dr. Valentine Henderiks (Université Libre de Bruxelles / Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage) : Between tradition and innovation: The serial production of devotional paintings in Albrecht Bouts’ workshop at the beginning of the 16th century

12:10 pm Discussion

1:45 pm Lecture by Joris Van Grieken (Royal Library of Belgium, Prints and drawings) : The monogrammist IANR alias Jan Rombouts. A ‘peintre-graveur’ from Leuven in the context of his time

2:25 pm Coffee break

2:45 am Lecture by David Lainé (IPARC) : A closer look at new infrared reflectograms of paintings by Jan Rombouts revealing a very elaborate underdrawing

3:25 pm Discussion

3:45 pm Visit to the exhibition
