The five main themes of Het Scheepvaartmuseum are:
• The Dutch and the world. Maritime history is approached from an international perspective.
• The Netherlands as a maritime nation. The significance of the maritime sector for the environmental planning, the working population, daily life, vocabulary etc. is approached from a national perspective.
• The sea as source of inspiration. The maritime history of the Netherlands as reflected in the production of maritime art.
• The sea as a new challenge. The Dutch and their new relationship with the sea (water sports, pleasure boating, beach culture, environmental issues etc.).
• Amsterdam as port city. The maritime history of Amsterdam, its ports, shipping companies and other manifestations of the maritime sector, especially of ‘s Lands Zeemagazijn (the Arsenal; the building where the museum is located) and its direct neighbourhood.

Research theme 1: Sailors
Museum staff intends to explore the museum’s collections to a larger extend regarding the social status of sailors and skippers on inland waterways. We desire to expand our knowledge about relevant material in the collections as we plan to focus more intense on maritime people in presentations programs and publications.

Research theme 2: Water recreation
In the Netherlands, 500,000 people own a boat. The Dutch landscape is unique because of the combination of a high level of urbanization and many fairly protected inland waterways. The museum plans the address two research topics: the social history of the Dutch pleasure boat from the seventeenth century till the present day, and the popularization of water sports in the twentieth century – with a particular focus on the water sports culture.

Research theme 3: Art and seafaring
From ancient times onwards, people have conveyed their vision on seafaring and sailors through art.
This has resulted in an impressive body of Dutch cultural heritage material in maritime museums (in the Netherlands and abroad), in art museums, and in private collections. This theme focuses on the exchange between the production of maritime art and seafaring.

Research theme 4: The Dutch and foreigners
Per definition, seafaring is international in character. Dutch discoverers, mariners, soldiers or immigrants encountered ‘ strangers’ , as colleagues, trading partners, conquerors or victims, friends or foes. The collection travel literature and other works in prints and manuscripts of the early modern era is extensive, as are the collections related to cartography, literature about navigation, and navigation instruments. The museum conducts research concerning the context (knowledge, mentality) of Dutch discoverers and mariners vis à vis their destinations and other people from the sixteenth century on.

Research theme 5: Innovation in Dutch shipbuilding
The museum also houses a large collection of technical drawings and literature related to ship yards and shipbuilding. Much of this material comes from these yards. This extensive collection deserves more attention. Research can be focused on the relation between the rapid modernization in shipbuilding (especially after 1880) and modernization in the Netherlands in general from the late nineteenth century onwards.
