En quoi les objets sont-ils présents, perceptibles, concevables non seulement dans le domaine sensible, mais aussi au-delà des sens ? La question centrale de ce numéro thématique touche – à propos des expériences et représentations médiévales – aux imperfections de la perception humaine et aux aspirations incessantes à faire sens à partir des réalités du monde. Les femmes et les hommes du Moyen Âge, on peut le dire, ont développé une virtuosité spécifique dans l’expérience et la création d’un monde structuré par les limites du perceptible. L’histoire de l’art, il faut l’ajouter, traite aussi de telles limites en cherchant à rendre leur sens aux réalités du passé.
The central question of this thematic issue is whether and how objects are present, perceptible, and conceivable not only within, but also beyond the senses. This question addresses – in medieval experiences and representations – the imperfections of human perception, and the ordinary struggle to make sense of the realities of the world. Medieval women and men, it can be argued, developed a specific virtuosity in experiencing and shaping a world defined by the limits of the perceptible. Art history, it must be added, also deals with such limits in its endeavor to make sense of the realities of the past.
