The Terra Foundation for American Art organizes dialogues which focus on important topics of American visual culture. To further cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary exchanges on American art, these dialogues bring together international scholars, university students, museum curators, and artists who set forth new perspectives on American art.

Katherine Baker est doctorante au sein du département d’histoire de l’art de l’université de Virginie. Boursière de la Fondation Kress, elle poursuit ses recherches dans le cadre de l’Institut national d’histoire de l’art.

The Terra Foundation for American Art International Essay Prize recognizes excellent scholarship by a non-U.S. scholar in the field of historical American art (circa 1500—1980). The winning manuscript should advance understanding of American art and demonstrate new findings and original perspectives. It will be translated and published in American Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s scholarly journal, which will also cover the cost of image rights and reproductions, and the winner will receive a $500 award. This prize is supported by funding from the Terra Foundation for American Art.

Two eight-week Terra Visiting Professorships in American Art are available through the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art for the academic years 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 to a senior academic whose work examines American art and visual culture with a secondary specialization in transcultural context/transatlantic exchanges. The candidate is not required to hold a teaching position in American art history as long as American art, or art and visual culture produced in the United States, constitutes a substantial part of the candidate’s area of specialization and courses taught. The Terra Foundation for American Art annually offers ten Terra Summer Residency fellowships in Giverny, France, to artists and scholars from the United States and Europe for the independent study of American art and visual culture within a framework of interdisciplinary exchange and dialogue.During the eight-week stay, senior artists and scholars are in residence to mentor the fellows and pursue their own work.
