Gendering Museum Histories (Oxford, 7-8 Sept 16) Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, September 7 – 08, 2016
Museums and Galleries History Group Biennial Conference Gendering Museum Histories This conference addresses the relationship between museums, galleries and gender during the last 400 years. Museums can be understood as buildings, institutions, collections, displays, interpretations and groups of people; each of these aspects has both reflected and shaped ideas about gender and its construction and meaning. While the gendering of collections and museum displays has attracted some attention (for example Porter 1990; Machin 2008), too often other gendered aspects of museum and gallery history, such as employment practices or visitors, have been mentioned only in passing, yet it seems likely that museums have been responsible . . . → En lire plus

Identity in Art and Art History (San Jose, 16 Apr 16) San Jose State, April 16, 2016
The Art History Association at San José State University invites advanced undergraduate and graduate students in art history and related disciplines to submit proposals that engage art in dialogue with identity for consideration for a 20-minute presentation at the 22nd Annual Graduate Student Symposium, “Identity in Art and Art History.” Cultural identity informs art, and art informs cultural identity at the collective and individual level. Cultural identity has a tremendous impact on the philosophies and methods engaged by artists, and it contributes greatly to works of art understood as embodiment, performance, representation or, occasionally, provocation to an operation of meaning. But what do art . . . → En lire plus

Melancholy and Solitude in the History of Ideas and Art History
A type of artist established himself in western culture once Marsilio Ficino took up Chapter XXX, I of the pseudo-Aristotelian Problems, where the creative figure is already described as manic and melancholic by his very nature. Melancholy hence became the condition of genius, the dark shadow to the clarity of artistic production. The diagnosis of ‘melancholy’ was removed from clinical vocabulary in the course of the twentieth century and replaced by a fundamentally different conceptual apparatus. No longer identified as the defining and formative characteristic of genius, it was instead reluctantly conceded to be a brief clouding of the mind described as a case ‘of’ melancholy. Yet the psychopathological concept . . . → En lire plus

Concurrently, a wide array of new digital technologies—developed recently and tested in various contexts for fieldwork, site management, and spatial analysis—promises to transform the way in which architectural historians examine their material.

The exhibition is a primary site of cultural exchange; part spectacle, part socio-historical event, and part structuring device, exhibitions establish and administer meanings of art and cultural heritage. Temporary exhibitions increase in cultural importance, while the traditional role of museums as institutions of Bildung transforms – even museums with well known and established collections follow the call for ever changing exhibitions. Understanding the changing role of curating in this process calls for new research. While the spatialized discourse of objects remains vital, curating also takes part in expanded cultural practices. In critical museum studies, the museum is defined as one of . . . → En lire plus

The dominant narratives of Modernism promote an iconoclastic approach to the past. Postmodernism, with its impulses towards appropriation and pastiche, would engage a more absorptive, constructive approach to history. Both, however, obscure the reality of the Italian circumstance. Passatismo Italianità and the ever-visible presence of the past created innumerable opportunities to explore complex temporal structures in their work through subtle reference, utilization and reconfiguration of histories both national and local, recent and distant. Recognition of temporal nuances within the work of modern and contemporary Italian artists is often neglected in favor of more literal interpretations. In such . . .

. . . → En lire plus
