The Belvedere Research Journal (BRJ), a peer-reviewed, open-access e-journal, invites submissions for its next issue. The BRJ publishes original and innovative scholarship on the art history and visual culture of Central Europe, from the medieval period to the present.

Founded in 2023, the journal is dedicated to promoting research on Central European art and culture beyond national borders and languages. We particularly welcome contributions that situate Central European and Austrian art practices within a broader global framework and promote transdisciplinary methodological approaches. We especially encourage submissions that challenge established narratives, explore transnational and transcultural exchanges, highlight the intercultural dynamics of the art world, and shed light on historically underrepresented perspectives.

Imaginaires cartographiques : Espaces et images de l’Europe centrale et orientale, de la Méditerranée orientale, du Caucase et de l’Asie centrale.

Au XXe siècle, l’effondrement d’empires (ottoman, austro-hongrois, russe/soviétique) ou d’États multiethniques (Yougoslavie) a reconfiguré les territoires de l’Europe centrale et orientale, de la Méditerranée orientale, du Caucase et en Asie centrale. Les (re)délimitations de l’espace ont déplacé des communautés, restreint la mobilité et redessiné des régions, de même que leur réseau de communication. Tout au long de l’histoire, la cartographie n’a pas seulement enregistré les ambitions impérialistes et colonialistes, elle a également joué un rôle crucial dans la construction des nations, à mesure que ces régions se re-définissaient. Beyond boundaries. Artists and art critics from Central and Eastern Europe in the West.

The aim of the Special Issue is to present artists and art critics from Central and Eastern Europe who gained a special position in the Western Art World and played an important role in the development of art and art criticism.
