L’analyse formelle ou fonctionnaliste de l’espace sacré tend à voir le bâtiment ecclésial comme une juxtaposition d’espaces clairement distincts – la nef, le chœur, ou encore le transept – dont la séparation refléterait notamment la différence d’état (clercs et laïcs). L’espace ecclésial peut être également envisagé comme un agrégat de chapelles de différentes tailles, ainsi que le suggère la lecture des écrits de Charles Borromée : celui-ci considérait le chœur comme une « chapelle majeure » (de capella maiori) par opposition aux chapelles et autels mineurs
