Dans le cadre de son programme « Histoire de l’art et cultures de table », l’Institut national d’histoire de l’art organise une session de la seconde Conférence internationale d’Histoire et des Cultures de l’Alimentation.

La gastronomie a été souvent définie comme un discours, dans une perspective logocentrique qui n’accorde qu’une place secondaire aux perceptions sensibles. De ce cadre, les « images » ont ainsi été envisagées comme des illustrations des textes ou des pratiques, c’est-à-dire comme des objets mineurs, auxiliaires ou médiateurs. Longtemps mal aimé et mal compris, l’art des années 1980 fait depuis peu l’objet de relectures historiographiques. La décennie 1980 tend en effet à être perçue comme un moment hédoniste et « léger », succédant au « moment théorique » des années 1960-1970. Or, l’inflexion récente des méthodes de l’histoire de l’art en direction des cultural studies permet de réévaluer la décennie 1980, marquée certes par un certain désenchantement politique, mais aussi par de nouvelles formes de réinvestissement social de l’art.

Melancholy and Solitude in the History of Ideas and Art History

A type of artist established himself in western culture once Marsilio Ficino took up Chapter XXX, I of the pseudo-Aristotelian Problems, where the creative figure is already described as manic and melancholic by his very nature. Melancholy hence became the condition of genius, the dark shadow to the clarity of artistic production. The diagnosis of ‘melancholy’ was removed from clinical vocabulary in the course of the twentieth century and replaced by a fundamentally different conceptual apparatus. No longer identified as the defining and formative characteristic of genius, it was instead reluctantly conceded to be a brief clouding of the mind described as a case ‘of’ melancholy.
